Presidency University students will vote on Thursday in the first campus polls in Bengal in almost three years.

Campus polls were last held in January 2017.

The College Street institution is the first among the four unitary universities the government allowed in October to hold campus polls.

The other three are Jadavpur University, Rabindra Bharati University and Diamond Harbour Women’s University.

The Presidency campus was covered in posters and graffiti on the eve of the polls. The “wall of fame” on the ground floor of the main building, which has the names of some of Presidency’s illustrious alumni, has been covered with giant posters.

Various student unions had their supporters at the entry points distributing leaflets with candidate details and issues they are advocating.

“Students were looking forward to the polls... the restoration of elections has triggered a feeling of euphoria,” a university official said.

Most of the graffiti have focused on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and “saffron terrorism”.

Sayan Chakravarti, a student leader of Independents Consolidation, said: “Remember, the BJP that has its state headquarters a stone’s throw from our campus has vowed to enforce the NRC if they come to power in 2021. So, we are focusing on saffron terror.”

The polling for the 116 constituency representatives and five office-bearers will start at 10.40am. The results will be announced late on Thursday.
