“The tests have been advanced because by the time results are published, many bright students enrol elsewhere,” said a source at Presidency.

The authorities hope that an early admission test would help them draw a larger number of bright students.

The state joint entrance examination board, which has been conducting Presidency’s admission tests since 2015, announced the dates of next year’s exams on Tuesday.

“Since the tests have been advanced, we will publish the results earlier than usual. We hope if the aspirants are handed their rank cards earlier, they would think twice before enrolling in some other institute. Our objective is to stop this migration of students and help Presidency attract more and more bright students,” JEE board chairman Malayendu Saha said.

This year the results were published on July 13 and classes started in August.

As the admissions started late, a number of students who had cracked the entrance test enrolled in other colleges in Calcutta and some even moved to other states.
