Presidency University will hold campus polls on November 14, the university authorities announced on Monday.

On October 17, the education department had said Jadavpur, Presidency, Rabindra Bharati and Diamond Harbour Women’s universities may hold campus polls whenever they “deemed fit”.

Arun Kumar Maity, Presidency dean of students, issued a notification on Monday announcing the poll date and that results would be declared the same day.

The polls were held last time at the College Street Institution in January 2017.

The government imposed a bar after that to quell campus violence.

In the Presidency University Statute and Presidency University Act (amendment), 2013, the students’ union is known as the students’ council.

Poll details such as publication of provisional voters’ list department wise, the last date for submitting nominations, and the publication of the final list of contestants have been uploaded on the university’s website www.presiuniv.ac.in.

Nominations have to be submitted online. Direct elections will be held for the five posts of officebearers like general secretary, president, and vice-president.

Voters will elect class representatives who would select individuals to head bodies like debating circle and cultural forum.

“A teacher will continue to be the treasurer of the students’ council in keeping with the university act,” Maity said.

The Jadavpur University students’ welfare board will meet on November 23 to discuss the possible date for campus polls, dean of students Rajat Ray said.

A JU official said the university was unlikely to hold polls before the convocation, scheduled for December 24.

“Campus polls are traditionally held in January. We want to stick to that schedule. Besides, the semester exams are due in November and December; so, the polls can’t be held then.”

Officials of Rabindra Bharati and Diamond Harbour Women’s universities said meeting would be held soon to discuss poll dates.

JU had been rocked by a student protest earlier this year demanding polls. Vice-chancellor Suranjan Das has been gheraoed for at least five times between February and March.

On Friday, education minister Partha Chatterjee had said the government wanted to resume campus polls in Calcutta and Burdwan universities and colleges at the earliest.
