Sources said Chopra police had gone to Amtala to raid the house of Dil Mohammad. Major Alam, his son, is one of the accused in an abduction case and the police went there to nab him.

“Mohammad, Alam, along with some other family members, attacked the police with sharp weapons. They soon overpowered the police team, taking advantage of the darkness. The situation reached such an extent that the team had to stop the raid and leave the spot,” said a source.

Debasish Poddar, a sub-inspector of police, Pabitra Kundu, an assistant sub-inspector, and two constables suffered injuries. Also, the driver of the police vehicle was injured and the vehicle was ransacked.

The injured were taken to the block health centre and later, two of them were shifted to a private nursing home in Siliguri.

After the incident, a large contingent of police reached the village. They found that Mohammad and his family had fled the house. They launched a search and nabbed three persons, including a woman.

The arrested were Major Alam, his sister Kashmira Kharun, and their uncle Habibur Rahaman. Mohammad, however, is still at large along with some others.

A villager confirmed that Mohammad and his family had attacked the police team.

“The police are conducting raids and seeking details of the attackers. We are worried that Dil Mohammad and his family might resort to highhandedness against us thinking we are passing on information to the police,” he said.

Joby Thomas, the superintendent of police of the Islampur police district, said: “We are in search of some more people. Some sharp weapons have been recovered from
the house.”
