Acting on a tip-off, the police in Malda seized fake Indian currency notes (FICN) of face value of Rs 88,000 on Saturday night.
One person has been arrested in this connection.
Sources said that a Baishnabnagar police team in the district raided the Permanent Township (PTS) of NTPC.
They intercepted Jaharul Alam, a resident of Panchanandapur under Mothabari police station of the district who was apparently loitering suspiciously near the PTS rail gate.
“As he was frisked, 176 fake notes of 500–rupee denomination were found on him. He is suspected to be associated with a racket that circulates FICN,” said a police officer.
In the past month, FICN of around Rs 6 lakh face value has been seized from police stations of Malda district.
“Even FICN of Rs 200 denomination are found. This is alarming,” the officer added.
