The special operations group of Siliguri Metropolitan Police and a team from Pradhannagar police station jointly arrested six persons and seized around 4kg of brown sugar, worth Rs 4 crore, from them on Saturday.
Brown sugar is a derivative of heroin.
According to police sources, raids were done at Darjeeling More and Rajendranagar, a locality in Siliguri, on Saturday evening.
In Darjeeling More, the principal entry point to Siliguri, they nabbed Gafar Ali, Babar Ali, and Parimal Roy carrying 2kg of brown sugar.
In the other raid, Salim Sheikh, Tajibur Rahman and Karibul Islam were picked up from Rajendranagar with an equal quantity of brown sugar.
During preliminary investigations, the police have learned that Roy is from Naxalbari while the rest five are from Murshidabad.
“We suspect a gang from Murshidabad involved in peddling drugs in this region,” said a police officer.
