A bus, with residents from Sandeshkhali en route Barasat in North 24-Parganas, was allegedly stopped by police apparently to prevent the victims of violence from meeting Narendra Modi before the Prime Minister was to address a “Nari Shakti Vandan” rally.

But after youths in the bus protested on the road, the bus was allowed to proceed.

Villagers in Sandeshkhali have alleged that from Tuesday onwards, local police made calls and issued notices to them, especially women, to visit the local police station on Wednesday.

Modi’s third visit to Bengal in a week comes at a time when the state police is engaged in a legal tussle with the Central Bureau of Investigation over custody of suspended Trinamul strongman from Sandeshkhali, Sheikh Shahjahan, who was arrested last week after evading the cops for over 50 days.

On Tuesday, the Calcutta high court had instructed the state CID to hand over the case and Shahjahan to the CBI, which the state government has been stalling by moving the Supreme Court.

On Wedneaday, the Bengal government sought urgent listing of its plea in the Supreme Court challenging a Calcutta High Court order to transfer to the CBI the probe into an attack on Enforcement Directorate officials in Sandeshkhali on January 5. "You move an application. The CJI takes note of (urgent listing) applications during lunch hour. He will order listing of the plea," Justice Sanjiv Khanna said responding to the plea in the morning.
