Mamata Banerjee on Monday urged restraint and spoke in favour of peace in the wake of the developments in Bangladesh.

“I appeal to people of all communities with folded hands to remain calm and not engage in any communal behaviour or take the law into their own hands,” Mamata said in her Assembly chamber after the conclusion of the monsoon session.

“If our brothers and sisters who are there face some trouble, the governments of India and Bangladesh will look into it. We will do what the government of India asks,” she added.

According to Trinamool insiders, Mamata has instructed senior cabinet colleagues to ensure that all community leaders are spoken to for peace and good sense to prevail.

“I urge leaders of all political parties and everyone else not to post anything that will disrupt peace here,” she said. “I will ask all political leaders to leave this to the Centre, and not make any comments that might lead to violence or provocation.”

Asked about the Bangladesh situation and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, Mamata declined comment.

“We are all concerned about the situation in Bangladesh but one must not write or post something under the influence of their emotions that may disrupt peace in Bengal or the country,” said the chief minister. “I will say this to everyone, including the BJP. Some BJP leaders have already posted certain things, which I feel aren’t appropriate. I will also urge our leaders not to say or post any such thing,” she added.

“If there are some developments in the neighbouring country, there could be an impact in our country as well. We must remain calm and protect peace at all cost,” she added.
