Kashf, an intra and inter-school Urdu competition presented by Rehnuma-e-Niswaan, in association with The Telegraph Young Metro, saw around 20,000 students from 75 schools across Bengal taking part.
Md. Gulam Rabbani, a student of Class XII at Islamia High School, received the Student of the Year award. He also won the first prize for mental ability and third prize in the quiz.
“This is the third year that I am taking part in the competition. I was confident because of the hard work I had put in. This is an overall prize and this has been an important platform for me,” he said.
Spelling, poster-making, mental ability, quiz, essay-writing and elocution competitions were held in schools across North and South 24- Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and Calcutta since February.
The prizes were given away at a programme at Mahajati Sadan on Sunday.
The final round of elocution was also held on Sunday, when six students shared their thoughts on Unity and Media.
“The purpose of Kashf is to make students of vernacular-medium schools realise the importance of developing confidence and self-belief and to encourage and appreciate achievers,” said Tabassum Siddiqua, the secretary and founder of Rehnuma-e-Niswaan.
Rehnuma-e-Niswaan was started in 1999 by Tabassum Siddiqua and Sheharyar Salim.
Lt General (retired) Zameer Uddin Shah, former vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, was present as chief guest on the occasion.
