Former minister Partha Chatterjee on Thursday conveyed his best wishes to Trinamul Congress as it prepares to celebrate 25 years of its foundation in the New Year.
Chatterjee — arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on July 22 — and largely given the hot-potato treatment by his party, unlike its Birbhumheavyweight Anubrata Mondal, was being produced before a special court in Alipore, when he wished Trinamul well.
“I would like to wish the entire Trinamul family, especially workers, the very best for the New Year, and for the foundation day of the party….I would also like to wish the people of Behala, my area,” said Chatterjee, in an apparent bid to woo the top-tier leadership of Trinamul that sackedhim as secretary-general and suspended him.
As some apparent supporters on court premises raised slogans for him, journalists asked him if the party reciprocates his support.
“Ask those raising the slogans. I am with the people. I personally am with the party…. People are with me. The truth will emerge, sooner or later,” said Chatterjee.
Crores in cash, kilos of gold and real estate papers were found in the possession of Chatterjee’s close associate Arpita Mukherjee, also arrested by the central agency.
Standing by Mondal, Mamata and others in the party have largely distanced themselves from Chatterjee.
Trinamul insiders said Chatterjee was trying to get the party’s backing that Mondal, arrested by the CBI for his alleged role in cattle smuggling, has been enjoying.
“It is best to quietly wait and watch. Fortune is a fickle mistress. Especially in the Trinamul scheme of things,” said a party MP.
