Parole for 3000 prisoners in Bengal

The three-member panel said its second meeting would decide on other prisoners who could be granted parole

A committee constituted by Calcutta High Court has recommended three-month paroles for 1,038 convicts and 2,060 undertrials lodged at different prisons in Bengal.

The three-member panel said its second meeting would decide on other prisoners who could be granted parole.

In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Supreme Court administration had asked all high courts to take necessary steps to release some prisoners on parole. Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court T.B.N. Radhakrishnan had set up the three-member committee headed by state legal aid services chairman Justice Dipankar Datta for selecting prisoners who could be released on parole.

The committee met for the first time on March 27 and selected the prisoners for parole, state legal aid services member secretary Durga Khaitan said.
