A couple and their two minor children died when the car they were travelling in veered off the road and fell into a pond in Cooch Behar on Sunday night.
Sanajit Roy, 41, and his wife Bipasha, 41, were returning from a wedding at Tufanganj with their five-year-old daughter Ishashree and two-year-old son Ivan when the
accident occurred.
The family was from Kaljani-Kauardera village under the jurisdiction of Pundibari police station in Cooch Behar district.
Subham said his cousin Sanajit had bought the car around three months back. “After attending the wedding, they were returning home. When the car reached the Kurarpar area, it went off the road and fell into a pond. Local people rushed for help and rescued them,” he said.
When the four were brought to MJN Medical College and Hospital in Cooch Behar, the on-duty doctors pronounced them dead.
“We have no idea how the crash happened. Most of our relatives are still in shock,” added Subham.
Sources said Sanajit was a teacher at Bosepara Kuthibari Upper Primary School and Bipasha taught at the Dari Kamarai Primary School. Both the schools are located at Natabari in Tufanganj.
Dyutiman Bhattacharya, the superintendent of police of Cooch Behar, visited Sanajit’s village and met their family members on Monday. “It is an unfortunate incident. We are probing the case,”
he said.
Police officers who started an investigation said they suspected that the car was at a high speed. “There was dense fog and it seems that because of low visibility, the car went out of control and fell into the pond,” said an officer.
