Three people died and at least 10 people have reportedly sustained injuries after an overhead water tank on platform numbers 2 and 3 collapsed at the Burdwan railway station around 12.10 pm on Wednesday.
The condition of three of the injured are stated to be critical.
All injured have been shifted to the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.
Railway officials, including RPF and GRP personnel, alongside the state fire services department crew were engaged in rescuing the affected passengers, it was learned. The deaths were confirmed by the superintendent of the hospital.
Train services in the division were affected but Eastern Railway officials confirmed that services along platform numbers 1 and 4 in Burdwan station have currently been resumed.
An inquiry into the incident has been ordered by the railways.
The large metal water tank fell on waiting passengers on the combined platforms 2 and 3 at Bardhaman station, the ER official said, reports PTI.
Stating that three railway employees have been suspended, the official said.
