MLAs of the Congress and the Left Front on Wednesday spoke about alleged “unconstitutional” attitude of the Mamata Banerjee government on the Day Two of the Assembly’s special session to observe the 70th year of the adoption of the Constitution.
Turning the table on the Bengal government, Forward Bloc MLA Ali Imran Ramz drew parallels between the Narendra Modi dispensation and the Mamata Banerjee regime over alleged misuse of constitutional powers.
“We had heard that serious patients are hospitalised at 2am but never heard of being discharged during that time. The President, the prime minister and the governor had violated the constitutional provisions to revoke the President’s rule in Maharashtra to allow the formation of a BJP-led government,” Ramz said, echoing the Trinamul concerns about the government formation in Maharashtra.
Ramz then used the speech of senior Trinamul minister Subrata Mukherjee, who had been critical of the BJP’s alleged attempts at horse-trading to grab power, to attack the Mamata dispensation.
“Subrata babu has very rightly pointed out horse trading in Maharashtra. But who is buying all the horses in Bengal? Is there any answer to this?” asked Ramz, referring to a series of defections to Trinamul from other parties in the state.
He alleged that the Mamata government had taken away the basic constitutional right of the people of Bengal to vote.
“The irony is that the government that has taken away our voting rights are observing Constitution Day and discussing its importance. During the panchayat polls, the Opposition parties were not even allowed to submit nomination papers.”
Opposition chief whip and Congress MLA Manoj Chakraborty and CPM MLA Sujan Chakraborty were also critical of the violation of anti-defection law in the state.
“No actions have been initiated in the past three years against the MLAs who had defected to Trinamul in violation of the anti-defection law. Isn’t it anti-constitutional?” asked Chakraborty, the Congress MLA from Behrampore.
