A person died in a downpour-triggered landslide in Sikkim while three other residents of a tea estate in the outskirts of Siliguri in Bengal were injured after being struck by lightning on Wednesday.

Since Wednesday morning, it rained heavily in Sikkim, in and around Siliguri and in some parts of the hills. The monsoonal downpour triggered a slide in Lingya, a village in Mangan district of Sikkim. The landslide damaged a house. Sometime later, during a search, a person’s body was recovered from the debris, said sources in the district administration.

In Gangaram tea estate, which is around 15 kilometres from Siliguri town, workers were plucking tea leaves at the plantations amid the rain when lightning struck the area. Three tea workers suffered injuries in the lightning strike.

Roma Reshmi Ekka, the sahakari sabhadhipati of the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad, rushed to the spot. Ekka made arrangements for the injured to be immediately sent to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for treatment. “I have spoken with the superintendent of the NBMCH and have requested him to provide all necessary treatment to the trio,” said Ekka.

Heavy rainfall also led to water-logging for some hours in some areas of Siliguri. The water, however, started receding in the afternoon as the rain stopped. Sources in the Met office said that the southwest monsoon is active in the region. Weathermen have forecast more rainfall during the next couple of days.
