A person was killed and eight others, including two children, were injured when a car apparently lost control near Mahishbathan market on the Krishnagar-Karimpur state highway on Saturday evening.
Police said the car was speeding towards Karimpur on a wet street around 7.30pm when the accident occurred.
It hit a lamppost, some persons including Chandradeb Biswas, 46, who died, and dashed into a stationary three-wheeler where some children were seated.
Local residents and traders rescued the victims and took them to the Karimpur rural hospital, where a farmer, was declared dead.
Badal Biswas, his brother, said: “My elder brother was speaking to some persons on the pavement when the vehicle ran him over after hitting an auto-rickshaw.”
An attending doctor said: “Most of the injured persons have multiple injuries.... The deceased had a fatal head injury.”
Police seized the vehicle but the driver managed to flee.
