The family of the 17-year-old girl from North Dinajpur who was allegedly raped and murdered last month has said they will not accept her higher secondary examination mark sheet to protest “police apathy”.

The police have claimed that the girl had died by suicide. Her family alleged that the police were showing a lax attitude in conducting the probe into her death.

The family has also demanded the arrest and exemplary punishment of all involved in the alleged crime.

“My daughter was an HS examinee. She passed the exam with 49 per cent marks, but is no more. On May 31, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education is supposed to distributethe mark sheets. We havedecided not to accept it in protest. She had aspired to join the nursing course butis lying in a grave now near our house. Instead of her death being probed and arrests being made, it is being toldthat my daughter hascommitted suicide by consuming poison. This is utterlyhumiliating for us,” said the girl’s mother.

Her death had led to an uproar in North Dinajpur district. A rally on April 25, conducted in protest of her death, turned violent. The mob attacked the Kaliaganj police station, torched it and vandalised nearby homes.

After the incident, thepolice conducted a raid in neighbouring villages. Mrityunjoy Barman, a youth, was allegedly gunned down bya police officer during theraid in the small hours of April 27.

The girl’s family had approached Calcutta High Court, seeking a CBI probe.

The high court ordered a special investigating team comprising two retired police officers and a senior police officer in service.

“If the school forces usto accept our niece’s mark sheet, we will receive it but will immediately dispatch itto chief minister Mamata Banerjee in protest. We are utterly disappointed with themanner in which the state handled this case,” said the girl’s uncle.

A senior police officer said the SIT had taken up the case and was currently gathering information.
