Police in North Dinajpur have arrested a suspected contract killer in connection with the murder of a Trinamool Congress leader last month.
The police are in search of two other contract killers who had also opened fire during the shootout.
On July 13, TMC leader Bapi Roy was holding a meeting with some other party workers at a roadside eatery off NH-27 at Srikrishnapur under Islampur police station. A group of armed men reached the area and started shooting indiscriminately. Bapi was hit by nine bullets while Mohammad Sajjad, another TMC worker, took a bullet in his back. Sajjad is recovering now.
Cops from the Islampur police district rushed to the spot, gathered CCTV footage and initiated a probe. Aniket Sarkar, a resident of Bidhannagar in Darjeeling district, was arrested on July 16.
“We came to know that the shooters were brought from Bihar. Our team raided some areas of Bihar along with the local police and arrested a person who was directly involved in the shootout. We are in search of two others,” said Jobi Thomas, superintendent of police of Islampur police district.
