North Dinajpur: Murder whiff in youth’s death

Police officers who visited the spot suspect that the 25-year-old was hacked to death

The body of a youth was found at a deserted location in Karnajora on the outskirts of Raiganj town, North Dinajpur district, on Friday night.

Police officers who visited the spot suspect Anukul Debnath, 25, was hacked to death. Three persons have been detained.

Sources said Anukul was spotted dead at Chatrapur under Karnajora police outpost.

“We were having Basanti Puja in the locality and most of the residents had congregated there. Suddenly, we got information that the body of the youth was spotted nearby. We went to the spot and then called up the police,” said Suman Debnath, a panchayat member.

A team from the police outpost reached the spot. Arsh Verma, the additional superintendent of police, also went to the spot. Police spoke to residents for information.

“We suspect murder but can confirm after we get the post-mortem report,” he said.

In Jalpaiguri’s Malbazar. Schoolgirl Priya Toppo, 10, a resident of Saylee tea estate, died of electrocution on Saturday morning. The Class V student was on way to her school through a lane when she stepped into some accumulated water where a power cable had earlier snapped and fallen. She got electrocuted.

Residents resorted to protests, alleging that the employees of WBSEDCL didn’t carry out repairs on time. A Malbazar police team brought the situation under control.

Bangladeshi sent back

Troops of the 175 battalion of the Border Security Force at the Bamoor border outpost in North Dinajpur intercepted a Bangladeshi national in an injured condition while he was trying to infiltrate India. The Bangladeshi, from Dinajpur district, was given first-aid and handed over to the Border Guards Bangladesh through a flag meeting.

The BSF also carried out anti-smuggling drives across north Bengal on Friday night and seized different contraband items including cattle. The cost of the seized items is 1.22 lakhs, sources said.
