Family members of Mrityunjoy Barman, a youth allegedly shot dead by police in North Dinajpur last month, returned home to their village Chandga on Saturday, accompanied by state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and other party leaders.

“We were staying away because of pressure from various quarters. As we filed a police complaint accusing a police officer of my son’s death, we are being asked to withdraw it. Our neighbours said they are with us, hence we returned today (Saturday),” said Rabindranath, the deceased’s father.

On April 25, violence sparked in Kaliaganj town during a rally in protest of the death of a minor girl in the district, which her parents claimed was a rape-and-murder case but the police said was death by poison. The mob torched the police station, beat up cops and damaged some houses. On the night of April 26, a police team reached Chandga, Mrityunjoy’s village, in search of persons in the mob. Mrityunjoy protested against some detentions following which a police officer allegedly fired at him and he died on the spot early on April 27.

After this, his family moved out of the village.

On Saturday, Majumdar said: “This family is a victim of police atrocities. They want a CBI probe, which we support. We brought them home. They are still feeling intimidated.... If they face any problem, we won’t spare the police and administration.”

Chandga villagers said they would ensure the family’s safety.

The state BJP chief also went to Daribhit, a village in the same district, and paid tribute to Rajesh Sarkar and Tapash Barman who died in suspected police firing in 2018 during a protest against the hiring of teachers at a school. Recently, Calcutta High Court ordered an NIA probe into the deaths.

“We have full faith in the judiciary,” said Majumdar.

District Trinamul chief Kanaialal Agarwal accused the BJP of using bereaved kin for politics.
