A group of Trinamul Congress councillors at Bhatpara municipality on Monday decided to bring in a no-confidence motion against chairman Arjun Singh who had left the party and joined the BJP recently.
Singh, the four-time MLA of Bhatpara in North 24-Parganas, is likely to be fielded in the Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat by the BJP.
The Bhatpara municipality has total 35 seats, of which 34 were won by Trinamul. One councillor belongs to the Left Front. With the death of a councillor and exit of Singh, Trinamul’s tally has come down to 32.
Urban development minister Firhad Hakim and Trinamul district president and minister Jyotipriyo Mullick had convened a meeting of all the 32 party councillors at the Bengal Assembly building on Monday. It was attended by 21 councillors headed by vice-chairman Somnath Talukdar.
“That means, we have the majority and we will take control of the civic body from Singh,” said Talukdar.
Singh said he was confident of winning the no-trust motion. “Don’t forget it will be in secret ballots and I am confidant to win the motion.”
Mullick alleged that there had been no audit in the municipality for many years and the state would initiate audit process immediately.
