The new mayor’s council was sworn in on August 30, ending a period of uncertainty at the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.
As reported earlier, Anita Mondal took oath as the chairperson. All the former mayor in council members — Rajesh Chirimar, Rahima Bibi, Sudhir Saha, Pranay Kumar Ray and Birendra Nath Biswas — retained their positions. The only new face was Debraj Chakraborty, replacing Prosenjit Sardar who had stepped down following Sabyasachi Dutta’s resignation. Chakraborty got Sardar’s portfolio of sports and youth services.
Among several anouncements at her first press meet after being sworn in as mayor, Krishna Chakraborty held out hope that work would resume on Rabindra Bhavan, now christened Rabindra Angan by the chief minister.
“Construction had got stalled on technical grounds but we have revived the project. We expect to inaugurate the ground floor of the centre before Bidhannagar Mela (Utsav) this winter,” she said, adding that Rs 4 crore, earned from the fair, is being pumped into the project.
