Authorities of an NGO-run school on the outskirts of the city had to reverse its decision of asking an HIV+ teacher to go on a long leave following intervention of the state government.

Sources said authorities of the school for students having learning difficulties and with special mental abilities had recently come to know that one of their teachers was HIV+.

The school learnt about the teacher’s medical condition after his marriage to a HIV+ woman went viral both on mainstream media and social media platforms.

“The school authorities asked the teacher to go on a long leave that made him apprehensive of losing his job. The school sent him on leave fearing adverse impact on the students,” said a source.

Biplab Roy, the administrator general and official trustee of Bengal, on behalf of the state government on Tuesday summoned all stakeholders, including the teacher and his wife, to his office in the New Secretariat building to resolve the issue.

“After a long discussion, we were successful to make the school authorities understand that the law did not permit them to treat an HIV-positive person in such a way. The school authorities ensured that the youth can join the school any day and there will be no further problem,” said Roy at a press meet on Tuesday afternoon.

“The newly married HIV-positive couple was suffering from mental agony that there was none to stand by them. We are very happy that the controversy has been resolved,” he added.

The head of the school told reporters that he had no problem in taking the teacher back.

“We did not terminate him. He will work in the school like before,” he said.
