New Jalpaiguri police arrested two persons after an improvised firearm and one round of live cartridge were seized from their possession here on Sunday night.
The arrested duo — Barun Das and Paltu Dutta — are residents of Fuleswari area of Siliguri. “They had assembled on the Mahananda bank near Naukaghat and were planning a crime when we nabbed them,” said a police officer.
In another incident, the BSF posted in Jalghar border outpost on the India-Bangladesh border in South Dinajpur district arrested a 40-year-old woman for allegedly trying to smuggle contraband on Sunday. Punam Shaw was held with around 500gm of cannabis and some cough syrup bottles while she was trying to smuggle the items to Bangladesh .
Also, a Hilli resident was nabbed on Monday with around 10 gm of heroin. Ichub Mondal was trying to smuggle the narcotic to Bangladesh.
The cost of the seized items is around Rs 8 lakh, BSF sources said.
Both the smugglers have been handed over to the police, BSF sources said.
The BSF carried out anti-smuggling drives in different areas across the north Bengal frontier on Sunday and Monday and seized various contraband items including cattle and cough syrup bottles. The cost of the seized items is around Rs 8 lakh, said sources.
