The father of a woman from Delhi, who had appeared for NEET 2024, has lodged a cheating complaint against the owner of a coaching centre in south Calcutta.
NEET is a pan-India medical entrance examination.
The centre used to be run from a building on Park Street.
The centre allegedly took ₹16 lakh from the father but failed to deliver on the promise of a medical seat for his daughter, police said.
The complainant told the police that his daughter was promised a seat in a government medical college irrespective of the marks she would score in NEET.
Sourish Ghosh, the owner of the coaching centre, has been arrested. He has been charged under IPC sections related to cheating, fraud, forgery and criminal conspiracy.
An officer said the woman’s family paid the centre ₹16.8 lakh in 2023. “The woman appeared for the exam this year but failed to make it.”
The accused also sent the family a few documents that apparently showed the woman’s name on the list of the students who qualified for the government medical college.
Ghosh has been remanded in police custody.
