A suspected smuggler was arrested with narcotic estimated at Rs 1.75 crore from Panighata More in Bagdogra on Monday.
According to police sources, around 850 grams of brown sugar, a derivative of heroin, was recovered from Abdul Rouf Biswas, a resident of Narayanpur in Malda. The raid was conducted by the special operation group of Siliguri Metropolitan Police and a team of Bagdogra police station.
“Biswas was intercepted and searched and around 850 grams of brown sugar was recovered from his possession. The estimated price of the seized narcotic is around Rs 1.75 crore. Biswas has been booked under the NDPS Act,” said a police officer.
The police suspect that Biswas is a member of a narcotic smuggling racket and he was in Panighata to deliver the consignment.
In another incident, the BSF apprehended a suspected Bangladeshi smuggler while he was trying to infiltrate into South Dinajpur district on Monday.
Also, the force seized contraband items priced at Rs 13.68 lakh on Monday and Tuesday.
BSF jawans, posted in Salgram border outpost at the India-Bangladesh border in South Dinajpur district, have apprehended Sefadul Islam, a resident of Naogaon district of Bangladesh and a suspected smuggler, on Monday while he was trying to infiltrate into India.
Also, the personnel of 135 battalion of the force posted in North Dinajpur district have arrested Kabul, an Indian smuggler on Tuesday and have seized 925 bottles of cough syrup from him while he was trying to smuggle the bottles to Bangladesh. Both of them have been handed over to the police.
The BSF has also carried out drives to check smuggling through the Indo-Bangla border on Monday and Tuesday and have seized different contraband items worth 13.68 lakhs. Among these include cattle and cough syrup bottles, sources said.
