Narcotics of Rs 1 crore seized, three held

Matigara police and the special operation group of Siliguri Metropolitan Police conducted a joint raid on the Khaprail More area and seized 1kg of brown sugar (a derivative of heroin) on Thursday night.

Three persons, Bishal Mondal and Manik Mondal of Dalkhola in North Dinajpur and Monu Mondal of Kaliachak in Malda district, have been arrested.

The police who conducted the raid after receiving a tip-off also seized a pick-up van and Rs 8 lakh in cash. The cost of the seized narcotics is over Rs 1 crore, sources said. Another team of Siliguri police arrested local youth Mohammad Anupam on Thursday night and seized an improvised firearm and one round of live cartridge from him.

The Border Security Force (BSF) deployed along the India-Bangladesh border in north Bengal also made some seizures and apprehended four persons, sources said on Friday.On Thursday, troops of 61 battalion of the force posted at Bhimpur border outpost in South Dinajpur apprehended three Indians, all of whom were alleged narcotics smugglers, while they were on way to Patiram from Laskarpur of the district.

Around 18 grams of suspected heroin have been recovered from them. The trio were Suil Sheikh, Mabud Mondal and Babu Mondal, who are from Malda and South Dinajpur districts. They were later handed over to Hilli police.In another incident, troops of 72 battalion of the BSF posted at Qualigarh border outpost in North Dinajpur district apprehended Bangladeshi national Md. Arif while he was allegedly trying to infiltrate into India on Thursday. He has been handed over to Goalpokhar police.The BSF also conducted raids on different locations from Wednesday to Friday and seized cattle and cough syrup. The cost of the seized items is Rs 4.84 lakh, sources said.
