The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the 159th battalion of the BSF conducted a joint raid in Malda on Saturday and seized around 400 grams of heroin worth Rs 40 lakh and some other substances suspected to be used to make narcotics.
Two persons have been arrested in this connection. The officials of the NCB suspect that the duo — a middle-aged man and his son-in-law — were running an illegal narcotics manufacturing unit.
On Saturday, the joint team raided the house of Febu Mandal at Bakshinagar village under Habibpur police station.
During the raid, they seized heroin and a number of other items such as 2.65kg of opium, 4.35kg of sodium carbonate in powder form, 70 grams of acetic anhydride and 740 grams of acetyl chloride in plastic bottles.
"The Calcutta zonal unit of NCB arrested Mandal and his son-in-law Chandi Mandal. The duo were produced in court and taken to Calcutta on transit remand," sources said.
The NCB suspected that the duo used to run a production unit-cum-peddling racket of narcotics and psychotropic substances. Recently, one of their relatives was arrested by Kaliachak police in connection with the peddling of brown sugar.
