Teachers of Nadia’s Santipur Municipal High School (primary section) began the “Paray Shikshalay” programme on Monday paying tributes to legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who passed away on Sunday.

Around 36 primary students were told stories about the life and works of the singer by the teachers. When the open-air school started in the morning, a big portrait of the singer was placed on a chair (in picture). After the picture was garlanded, teachers, students and guardians present on the occasion observed silence as a mark of respect to the departed singer.

Later, the teachers played some of her immortal songs in Hindi and Bengali that included her rendition of “Vande Mataram”.

Speaking to The Telegraph, headmaster Prasenjit Saha said: “The state government has instructed us to resume the communication process with students. Today (Monday), we thought of telling them about Lataji. Most of the students are aged about 5 and 6 years and did not hear about Lataji, but they identified some of her songs. Many guardians later met me and lauded the initiative.”
