BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda on Thursday said junior doctors were agitating for their fundamental need for security and assured them that the Union government was ready to provide any necessary support if they needed it.

“RG Kar (tragedy) is a glaring example of lawlessness and jungle raj. The junior doctors are asking for their security and they are fighting for it. There is nothing wrong with it. The people who are fighting to secure our life are suffering from insecurity. This is unthinkable. If they want any kind of help, we are ready to extend all our support,” Nadda said at a programme in a city hotel.

The Union health minister, who was addressing a group of scholars from Bengal in an outreach exercise to express gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the declaration of Bengali as a classical language, said the Centre, in the light of the Supreme Court’s directives, had sent three advisors to the state government and urged the state to comply and send a report.

Nadda alleged that the ruling Trinamul Congress was responsible for bringing in “threat culture”, in addition to the alleged syndicate raj and cut-money culture to the state.

“If you go through the NCRB data, you will find that Bengal tops in crimes against women, women trafficking, domestic violence, rapes, and that is evident in the incidents like RG Kar and Jaynagar,” he claimed.

Nadda, who lauded Modi for the Unesco recognition for Durga Puja and Santiniketan, said: “The chief minister of Bengal made no proposal for granting classical language status to Bengali; it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who took the initiative to do so.”

“The chief minister claims to be a proud Bengali, yet she has made no effort to promote the state’s culture and heritage, and under the tenure of the Trinamul Congress, Bengal’s condition has only worsened,” Nadda said.

All these claims — made by the BJP in the past — have been labelled “blatant lies” by Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamul ecosystem. The chief minister herself had furnished “evidence” of her direct, repeated intervention for the Unesco tags for Santiniketan, Durga Puja, and the classical language status for Bengali.

Trinamool also keeps citing the same NCRB stats to underscore how Bengal and Calcutta are exponentially better placed than most of India – especially the BJP-ruled states – in terms of the safety of women.

Nadda on Thursday went to the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission at Belur and spent some time at the Santosh Mitra Square puja, which is organised by BJP leader Sajal Ghosh.
