The PWD has started relocating mobile phone towers of two private telecom service providers from the rooftop of Nabanna, the 14- storey state secretariat, considering these could be a security hazard for the VVIPs.

The initiative was taken after an incident of fire in one of the towers on October 12 during repair work on the roof carried out by the PWD.

“The experts recommended that these mobile towers could be hazardous particularly when the VVIPs like the chief minister and the chief secretary have offices in the 14th and 13th floors. These towers would now be installed somewhere at the ground level of the building,” said a senior official.

“Though the flames were doused immediately, the incident exposed the vulnerability of the offices of the VVIPs. So the enquiry committee recommended relocating the mobile towers,” said a senior government official.
