Sagardighi police in Jangipur police district seized 3kg of heroin worth around Rs 6 crore from a car and arrested two occupants of the vehicle on Sunday night when they were reportedly on their way to supply the cache of the drug to a racket member in Jangipur.
Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a red Maruti Alto car at Annupur-Mirzapur crossing on NH12 in Sagardighi and traced the highly addictive analgesic substance from the two occupants of the four-wheeler.
Police also recovered a cash amount of around Rs 12,000 from Golam Mustafa, 34, and Luton Seikh, 38. Golam is a resident of Raghunathganj and Luton stays in Suti in Murshidabad district.
The duo were charged under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They were produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Jangipur, which remanded them to 14 days of police custody.
Speaking to mediapersons Bholanath Pandey, the chief of Jangipur police district, said: “We had prior information about the cache that was on its way to be delivered. Accordingly, we intercepted the car and recovered the heroin from the possession of two persons in the vehicle. The drug had been procured from Fulbari near Siliguri.”
Investigating officials attached to the Sagardighi police station said both the accused had been arrested on an earlier occasion under the NDPS Act for illegal possession of drugs in other states.
“Golam was arrested a few years ago in Uttar Pradesh and Luton was caught by Nagaland Police for ferrying drugs in the recent past. Both the accused were out on bail and committed the same crime again,” an investigating official said.
