Trinamul general secretary Abhishek Banerjee accused BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari of being insensitive and not rescuing an accident victim allegedly hit by a car in the Opposition leader's convoy at Chandipur in East Midnapore on Thursday night.

Addressing party workers during his Trinamul-ey Nabojowar outreach at Raninagar in Murshidabad on Saturday, Abhishek said: "How insensitive and cruel can a person be... How devoid of conscience? His car sped away at 100kmph without caring to stop for the minority-community youth who was struck down and bleeding to death."

Sheikh Israfil, 33, was allegedly struck down by a vehicle in Adhikari's convoy while he was crossing the road on a bicycle late on Thursday. He was taken to the hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

"A man with 100 CRPF personnel, 200 police personnel and a 50-car convoy cannot even get off and touch the ground with his feet. Such arrogance knows no limits.... If someone can behave this way as an Opposition leader, you should know how they may behave if voted to power...," Abhishek said.

BJP leaders, however, slammed Abhishek for the remarks and said Adhikari was nowhere in the vicinity when the accident took place.

Abhishek accused Behrampore Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury of "silence" in the wake of the Chandipur accident. The Trinamul leader said the Congress and the BJP "were friends" in Bengal.
