A young couple and their daughter were found dead at their home at a village in North Dinajpur district on Sunday evening.
The deaths led to tension in Keshabpur village under Hemtabad police station of the district, where they lived.
On Monday, their neighbours and relatives demonstrated in front of the police station, alleging the trio had been murdered.
Sources said that Kutubuddin Ali, 35, his wife Parveen Khatun, 30, and their seven-year-old daughter Mahi Nihar, were found dead at their home in Keshabpur.
The police recovered the bodies and sent them to the Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
The police have detained Mohammad Afaruddin, Ali’s father, for interrogation after coming to know he was having problems with his father and brother-in-law over some issues, including those related to ancestral property.
Ali, a farmer, would occasionally work in an e-commerce company.
A senior police officer said that Ali’s relationship with his father and brother-in-law had soured recently. “We are waiting for the post-mortem reports to know the cause of their deaths. Our officers are talking to people to gather information,” he said.
“We suspect that they were murdered over ancestral property. The police should find out the truth and arrest all those involved in the crime,” said Belal Hussain, Parveen’s brother who joined the protest in front of the Hemtabad police station.
After some time, the demonstration was withdrawn as the police assured protesters of a proper probe. “We are investigating the incident. People should keep patience,” said Kuntal Banerjee, the additional superintendent of police, North Dinajpur.
Body in field
Md Jasiar, 52, of Jalapara of Dhapganj on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri town, was found dead in a farm on Sunday evening.
He had been missing since Saturday afternoon.
Subahan Haque, his son, said that on Saturday, Jasiar returned home from the market and again went out on an errand, telling them he “would be late”.
“When he didn’t return even at 10pm, we started searching for him. I also went to the police station to inform them that my father had gone missing,” he said.
On Sunday evening, some residents spotted Jasiar’s body on a nearby paddy field with his bicycle nearby.
A Kotwali police team went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it for a post-mortem.
“We are waiting for the post-mortem report. My father didn’t have any dispute with anyone,” said the son.
The police have registered a case and begun a probe.
