A man in his late 30s, who works as a security guard and caretaker of a building in Salt Lake’s FE Block, allegedly drove a multi-utility vehicle (MUV) and rammed it into at least four cars parked in a service lane opposite Central Park around 10pm on Sunday, police said.

The man, whose identity the police did not reveal, ran away on foot.

An officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said, quoting eyewitnesses and drivers of other vehicles parked along the road, the man got into the driver’s seat of the MUV and was headed out of the service road when he hit several cars parked on it.

“Four cars have been damaged, three of them badly. The man fled on foot. We spoke to several eyewitnesses who said the car was being driven in an erratic fashion and suddenly picked up speed before hitting the other cars,” an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.

According to another officer, the man left the MUV right in front of a residential building.

“We had to bring in a small crane to move the car away. The other damaged vehicles mostly belong to residents of FE Block,” said the officer.

Across Salt Lake, many residents park their vehicles on service roads or on roads in front of their houses.

A senior officer of the commissionerate said they have managed to locate the owner of the car and the building where he works as a security guard.

“We have started a case under relevant sections for driving in a rash and negligent manner. We are looking for the accused and will be able to catch him soon,” the
officer said.

The MUV has been seized. Another officer said a mechanical test will be carried out to check whether the MUV had developed any snag.
