The Bengal Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday to set up an all-party team to lobby the Centre for multiple irrigation and flood control projects.

The 12-member team, which is supposed to comprise seven MLAs of the Trinanamul Congress and five of the BJP, will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union minister of jal shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to seek the Center’s support for irrigation and flood control projects in Bengal.

The delegation is primarily tasked to lobby the Centre for funds to implement around eight irrigation and flood control projects, including the Ghatal Master Plan. The eight projects require an allocation of Rs 7,834 crore.

State parliamentary affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, along with Trinamul’s chief whip Nirmal Ghosh, tabled the motion during the second half of Tuesday’s Assembly session.

While the Opposition welcomed the resolution, it remained unclear whether its legislators would be a part of the delegation. BJP’s chief whip Manoj Tigga lauded the resolution and said though the party had political and ideological differences with Trinamul, the saffron camp was willing to work together in the state’s interest.

However, the leader of the Opposition (LoP), Suvendu Adhikari, later said the matter would be discussed within the BJP before a final call was taken. “I was not in the House when the resolution was placed. Our chief whip (Manoj Tigga) has welcomed the decision while adding that a decision would be taken after consulting the LoP and other legislators,” Adhikari said.

He accused the state government of gross non-cooperation with BJP MLAs.

Sources said Adhikari was not keen on BJP MLAs becoming part of the proposed delegation after he had faced criticism from a section of BJP leaders for meeting chief minister Mamata Banerjee in her Assembly chamber.
