Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Bengal BJP president and Midnapore MP Dilip Ghosh on Wednesday to learn about the post-CAA ground realities in the state, sources said.

The session with Ghosh was part of Modi’s initiative to meet all 18 Lok Sabha MPs of the BJP in Bengal over the next few days. On Tuesday, the Prime Minister held meetings with two party MPs from north Bengal — Raju Bista (Darjeeling) and Jayanta Roy (Jalpaiguri).

“The PM will meet all 18 MPs from the state over the next few days,” a BJP parliamentarian said.

BJP insiders said at the meeting with Ghosh, Modi wanted to know about the people’s mood in Bengal and the law-and-order situation in the aftermath of the passing of the CAA. During the 20-minute session, the Prime Minister also sought to know whether benefits of central schemes were reaching the common people of Bengal, according to the sources.

“There were some organisational issues too. But overall the focus of the meeting with Ghosh was the ground realities in the state in the post-CAA period,” said a source.

During the meetings with Bista and Roy, the main agenda was local developmental issues, according to the sources. “Issues like the expansion of Bagdogra airport, holding tripartite meets involving stakeholders of the hills and the four-laning of national highways passing through the region were discussed,” a source said.

Roy, the Jalpaiguri MP, held the state government responsible for delay in the completion of the expansion. “I informed the Prime Minister that because of the non-availability of land, caused by the lackadaisical attitude of the state government, the four-laning of national highways has been affected. The NHAI has held several rounds of talks with the state to resolve the issue, but nothing has been done so far,” he told The Telegraph over phone.
