Mukul Roy was reported missing by his son on Monday, but the veteran politician soon landed in Delhi amid speculation on his next political manoeuvre.
The purpose of his visit remained unclear as of Tuesday evening, although many claimed that he might rejoin the BJP.
Roy, who turned 69 on Monday, won from the Krishnagar North Assembly segment on a BJP ticket. He has remained inert in public life for a while, mostly on account of his failing health. Soon after being elected as the MLA, he rejoined the Trinamul Congress. Although the BJP sought his disqualification, the matter is pending before Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee.
The former railway minister had joined the BJP in 2017.
“I have come here for some work. Can I not come to Delhi? I am an MLA now and an MP here. Why will I not come to Delhi?” asked Roy feebly, responding to questions from journalists at the Delhi airport.
Roy was a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Asked by ABP Ananda about the missing complaint that his son Subhransh had filed, Roy said: “Coming out of home without informing the family members doesn’t mean that I have gone missing.”
Roy also said he was very much with the BJP and had plans to meet senior party leaders like Amit Shah and J.P. Nadda.
Subhranshu, Trinamul’s former Bijpur MLA who had returned from the BJP to the ruling party, along with his father, lodged two separate FIRs. One complaint was filed at the Calcutta airport police station and the other at the Bijpur police station.
Subhranshu has alleged that there is a “big conspiracy” behind his father’s trip to Delhi and the sole purpose is to “malign” chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee. Abhishek is Trinamul's national general secretary — a post that Roy had once held.
However, Roy told ABP Ananda that no one had forced him to go to Delhi.”
At a news conference on Tuesday morning, Subhranshu said his father suffers from multiple ailments, including Parkinson’s, dementia and diabetes, and had recently undergone spinal and cranial surgeries.
“My father is not the same man he was three years ago…. I saw that he is saying he is an MLA and MP from Delhi. Can anyone with a stable mind say that?” he asked.
“If my father now joins the BJP now, it will not be in a mentally stable state,” he said, questioning the source of funds used to fly Roy to Delhi and said on Monday, someone had handed over Rs 50,000 to his father at the behest of an agency.
“My father’s monthly income is Rs 21,000. I have not been able to get in touch with him and I’m not sure if he is taking his pills and insulin properly. He needs to take 18 pills a day,” he added.
Subhranshu said it was wrong “to do politics” with a physically and mentally unstable person. “Chief minister Mamata Banerjee called me up to enquire about my father’s health yesterday."
Trinamul did not officially endorse Subhranshu’s claims. “Mukul Roy spends three days a week in the BJP, three days a week in Trinamul, relaxes over tea on Sundays,” said Trinamul leader Kunal Ghosh.
