Rajib Banerjee, the Trinamul Congress’s newly-appointed Nadia observer and backward community development minister, held his first review meeting with party workers on Saturday to discuss the shortcomings that led to their dismal performance in the Lok Sabha polls last month.

According to sources, Banerjee has identified internal bickering in Trinamul as the main cause of the party’s loss of the Ranaghat seat and instructed workers to reorganise their units from the ground level.

“This is not the time to blame anybody, but to ponder over mistakes and find out ways to achieve goals. I told party leaders to forget personal differences and start afresh,” Banerjee said after the meet.

Around 200 prominent leaders, councillors, MLAs, zilla parishad and panchayat samity members from the Ranaghat and Bongaon Lok Sabha seats were present at the closed-door review meeting in Kalyani.

A party insider, present at the meeting, said: “There was an abnormal flaw in our assessments before the polls. We acknowledge this without prejudice.”

“It is true we could not reach people and fought for personal supremacy, which caused the debacle,” he added.

Banerjee is also said to have personally asked party leaders from Chakda to settle their differences immediately in preparation for the coming municipal polls there.

“I have told party leaders to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots. The reorganisation will be done. I have advised the leaders to forget personal preferences and ego and work as one,” he said.

“The most important factor which the leaders were reminded of is to behave properly with people and to develop proximity so that they can be reached when needed,” added the minister, who will visit Krishnagar on June 15 to hold a review meeting.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is also expected to hold a review meeting with party leaders in Nadia on June 21.
