A migrant labourer died after when some crude bombs went off on an agricultural field at Tengridanga in Nadia’s Santipur on Thursday morning.
Ranaghat police have alleged that Somirul Seikh, 21, died when the bombs that he was making went off. Somirul’s family has claimed that the bombs were kept hidden in the field owned by his father.
Sources said Somirul, a resident of Gayeshpur-Mediapara in Santipur, was taken to the Nadia district hospital in Krishnanagar where he succumbed to injuries.
Police said the incident took place on an isolated char land that over the past few years has become a den of criminals.
According to sources and family members, Somirul was scheduled to leave for Bangalore on Thursday afternoon.
Uttam Sarkar, BJP’s local mandal president, said: “It is not known how the youth died, but it is quite possible that he was involved in making bombs. With the patronage of the Trinamool Congress, making bombs has become a cottage industry in these isolated char lands. Several bombs had been recovered from the area in recent times. But the police seldom conducted raids.”
A TMC leader in Santipur refuted Sarkar’s claim and said that the party had
nothing to do with criminal activities.
