“We have been mapping the chief minister’s progress for a week.... A microsurgery for her injured ligaments is required so that she can cope with the pain better,” a senior doctor said on Tuesday.

“A small procedure after a period of physiotherapy to inject a small dose of medicine always works better after a period of primary improvement.”

A team of doctors comprising a senior neurologist, radiologist and an expert from the physical medicine and rehabilitation department at the SSKM Hospital has been monitoring Mamata’s health.

Mamata had refused admission to the hospital despite doctors suggesting so.

“After examining the MRI report last Tuesday, we had decided on this microsurgery after a period of her initial recovery,” the doctor said.

“We are looking at a small procedure in the region above her left knee and the thigh to inject a dose of medicine. It will help in better managing the pain and the associated trauma. The recovery will be faster and she can immediately return to her normal routine.”

Sources in the hospital said a preliminary round of talks with the chief minister had been held explaining why the “procedure” was required. She has been told that the microsurgery will entail a small incision that will be used to inject the medicine into her injured ligaments, they said.

“We will finalise the date within a day or two,” the doctor said.
