Metro service in Calcutta disrupted after suicide attempt

BRIEFS: A truncated service was run between Noapara and Tollygunge before full services resumed around 11.10am

Metro services were disrupted for over 30 minutes on Thursday morning after an attempted suicide at Gitanjali (Naktala) Metro station. A 25-year-old woman jumped in front of a New Garia-bound train at 10.35am, an official said. “Power supply to the tracks was cut off and the woman, who lay near the central drain, pulled out. She was alive,” the official said. The woman was taken to hospital with head injuries and discharged later in the day, police said. A truncated service was run between Noapara and Tollygunge before full services resumed around 11.10am.

Presi hostel protest

Some Presidency University students blocked the College Street- MG Road crossing till late on Thursday over delay in repair of three wards of Eden Hindu Hostel. The students were also protesting the termination of service of eight employees of the hostel. The blockade began at 6pm and traffic in the area had to be diverted. A university official denied the allegations.

Vehicle catches fire

A Tata Ace caught fire on Vidyasagar Setu near the toll plaza on Thursday afternoon. A fire tender doused the flames. No one was injured, police said.

Attack cuffs

Two men were arrested for attacking the owner of a roadside eatery and one of his employees on Narkeldanga Main Road on Wednesday, police said. The owner had asked them to clear their dues, the police said. The duo have been charged with attempt to murder. The injured are in hospital.

Deer skin arrests

Two men were arrested with deer skin in South 24-Parganas’ Mandirbazar on Thursday. Barun Karmakar and Snehasish Haldar will be produced in court on Friday, a forest official said.

Godown fire

A fire broke out in a godown on the ground floor of a four-storey building in the Garden Reach area on Wednesday. One tender doused the flames. No one was injured.

Tree-fall injury

A dead tree fell on Gobinda Khatik Road in Tangra on Thursday morning, injuring a child. Local councillor Swapan Samaddar said the injury was not serious. An official of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation said the road was cleaned by noon.
