More than 8.2 lakh people travelled between the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of East-West Metro (Green Line) and the older north-south Metro (Blue Line) between March 15 and May 15.

The Blue Line, which links Dakshineswar and New Garia, meets the Green Line at Esplanade station.

Commercial services on the new section of the east-west corridor, which includes a stretch under the Hooghly, started on March 15.

East-West Metro is also operational on the Sealdah-Sector V stretch.

“Since the beginning of the commercial services.... more than 8.20 lakh passengers have travelled from different stations of Green Line to different stations of Blue Line till May 15,” said a Metro official.

“More than 46,000 passengers have travelled to Dum Dum and 39,000 passengers have travelled to Kalighat from different stations of Green Line 2 in the said period,” the official said.

“New Garia, Dakshineswar and Rabindra Sadan have also been the destination for many,” said the official.

The interface between the Green Line and Blue Line at Esplanade did not initially have sufficient signage to guide passengers from one line to another.

But the Metro authorities have since improved the signage with a slew of steps. Apart from banners and posters on the platform and concourse, they have now installed ceiling lights, and coloured footprints, in blue and green colours, to guide passengers from one line to another.
