A model who went to file a molestation complaint against a motorcyclist on Sunday was allegedly asked by police why she could not recall the vehicle’s entire registration number when she told them the last four digits.
A case of outrage of modesty has been started under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code against an unknown person, police said.
The model was walking to a coffee shop in a southern pocket of the city around 7.30pm on Sunday when the motorcyclist allegedly touched her inappropriately and sped away.
“A motorcyclist touched me and tried to speed away,” the woman said in a video she has posted on her Facebook timeline.
She screamed for help and managed to memorise the last four digits of the bike’s registration number.
The woman said she approached a few youths sitting nearby for help and they took her to the police station.
“I gave the police the last four digits of the bike’s registration number and also said that the rider was wearing a white and green T-shirt. But the police asked me why I could not recall the full number,” she said.
An officer said the data of a large number of registration plates has emerged using the combination of the four digits provided by the complainant.
“The details of each of the registration numbers has to be found out and then each owner has to be verified from his registered mobile number. It may take a while. We have started an investigation,” the officer said.
Once the police zero in on the motorcyclist, they will verify his location at the time of the incident before ascertaining whether he was the person they were looking for.
A few weeks ago, model Ushoshi Sengupta was allegedly heckled by a gang of helmetless bikers.
She had said that cops of at least two police stations were initially indifferent to her pleas for help citing jurisdiction.
