Commitment-phobic youngsters scared of marriage can learn a thing or two from a 25-year-old man in a village in Jalpaiguri.

On Wednesday morning, the youth climbed the tower of a high-tension power transmission line in Falakata, Alipurduar district, and clung to a wire while shouting that his father wasn’t allowing him to get married.

Biplab Roy doesn’t have a girlfriend. Nor does he have a job. He only wants to get married.

Baba amar biye dichche na.... Biyetey raji holey tobei ami nambo (My father is not getting me married.... I will descend only after he agrees to it),” shouted Biplab, aka Sholay’s Veeru, as he climbed the tower, despite having no Basanti in the picture.

Some villagers in Deobari, Falakata block, headed for their farms, spotted Biplab climbing a tower of the transmission line of the Power Grid of India.

The villagers feared his life might be at risk as the cables carry power of 33,000 volts. They rang up the Jateswar police outpost and informed OC Ashim Majumder, who in turn, told Power Grid officials. The power linewas disconnected.

Undaunted, Biplab held a wire and stood on the tower as cops and firemen reached the spot along with hundreds of onlookers.

After some time, the youth managed to sit on a wire and held another, hanging around 40 metres above the ground.

“He would have died of electrocution if the power supply was not cut,” saida villager.

The police and firemen used hand-held loudhailers, asking him to get down. Biplab refused and insisted his father come and promise him that his marriage would be held “in the presence of people”.

Finally, cops were sent to his house in Jalpaiguri’s Pradhanpara village, 25km from the tower.

Bhubeshwar Roy, his father and a marginal farmer, was dumbstruck to learn from the police about his son’s act. With the son perched on the wire, the father reached the spot around 8am and asked his son to get down withfolded hands.

Finally, the father agreed to get the youth married off. Biplab came down.

Cops dropped the duo home. The father, who ploughs a small patch of land, said: “Biplab is jobless. I told him to start earning and marry, but now I won’t object.”
