The father of the victim of the Maynaguri molestation-and-suicide case on Wednesday told a division bench of Calcutta High Court that he was satisfied with the state police probe into the case and did not want a CBI probe.

Hearing that, the division bench headed by Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava directed the state DGP to provide security to the girl’s family members and witnesses in the case.

Before Wednesday, the father had wanted a CBI probe.

The minor girl was allegedly molested in February by a local youth with Trinamul links, Ajoy Roy, who with his aides on April 13 reportedly threatened her and her family. The scared girl set had herself on fire and died some days later. Ajoy is under arrest.

In the courtroom on Wednesday, the counsel for the girl’s father and former advocate general of the state Kishore Datta told the judges that his client was comfortable with the SIT investigation and did not want a CBI probe.

The Chief Justice personally spoke to the girl’s father both in the courtroom and in his chamber to know if he had changed his decision following pressure by ruling party members. But the father stuck to his version and said he was satisfied with the SIT probe.

Advocate Sushmita Saha Dutta, who had initially moved the case on behalf of the victim’s family and demanded a CBI probe, repeatedly claimed before the court during the hearing on Wednesday that the girl’s sister wanted an investigation by the central agency. She told the court that the girl’s sister had said that members of Trinamul in Maynaguri had forced her father to change his earlier demand for a CBI probe.

The bench fixed the matter for hearing again on May 13.
