Neighbours said they heard the duo quarreling. One of them entered Abhiram’s house to find the elderly man lying in a pool of blood. Laxman, his son, stood with an axe.

“I somehow grabbed him. Others joined me. We then called the police,” said the neighbour, who didn't want to be named.

Every day, Abhiram used to dine at his married daughter’s place. On Friday night, as he didn’t turn up, Sujala, the daughter, suspected something was amiss.

“I rushed to our home and learnt my brother had murdered my father," she said, adding that they would often quarrel over property.

Police recovered the body and arrested Laxman.

Cop electrocuted

Malda: A sub-inspector of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) posted at a railway station in Malda died of electrocution on Saturday.

Another assistant sub-inspector of RPF got injured and is under treatment.

Sources said sub-inspector Rajesh Prasad Srivastav, 55, posted at Samsi railway station in Malda, was on way to the station with Arjun Singh, an ASI of the RPF, on a bike.

An electric pole hanging on the road snapped and fell on them as they were crossing Coolipara in Samsi.

Rushed to a rural hospital, Srivastav was declared dead by doctors.
