Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has said that the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Registry of Citizens will not be allowed in Bengal.

“This is not freedom at midnight. This is an eyewash being played by the BJP ahead of the elections. Why did they wait for four years?” Mamata asked on Monday evening at the state secretariat amidst a buzz that the Narendra Modi government could implement the CAA in the country.

“We haven’t received the notification yet. I want to see the rules that they have framed,” she said, adding that she would not allow any resident to be deprived of his/ her rights.

“If CAA, NRC is implemented and the citizenship of any individual is cancelled we won’t remain silent, we will protest. No NRC. We will not allow anyone to be sent to detention centres,” Mamata said. “Social, democratic, economic, property rights of the citizens should remain. In two days nobody can be granted citizenship. I am waiting to see the total law.”
