Mamata Banerjee has called a meeting of Trinamul Congress MPs, MLAs and other senior leaders on December 20 to discuss the party’s next course of action in the campaign against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and the National Register of Citizens.
The Trinamul chief called the meeting on a day several members of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen led by Asaduddin Owaisi participated in a blockade of railway tracks to protest against the CAB and the NRC.
Over 3,000 people blocked the tracks in Birbhum’s Muraroi station under the banner of two local apolitical organisations. The AIMIM members took part in the blockade without their party flags. AIMIM leaders said they were trying to gauge the sentiment on the CAB before increasing the groundwork to become a notable political force in the state.
Trinamul leaders, however, said the AIMIM’s aspirations were a long shot given that chief minister Mamata Banerjee had already called a meeting on December 20.
“The party and the chief minister have been fighting against the NRC and the CAB from the very beginning and we are not ready to hand over the issue to any other party or organisation. We hope the chief minister will discuss the party’s strategy to counter the CAB at the December 20 meeting ” a Trinamul leader said.
Anti-CAB protests were also held at Jangipur in Murshidabad, Ichhapur in North 24-Parganas and Santiniketan.
