Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleged on Wednesday that Mamata Banerjee was killing democracy in Bengal after realising that her politics of oppression and corruption over the people had ended.

“People of Bengal know Mamataji’s politics of oppression and corruption has come to an end. Nobody can save her now. So, she is making desperate attempts to kill democracy in the state,” Modi said in an interview aired on ABP Ananda on Wednesday evening.

The Prime Minister said workers of Opposition parties were being killed in Bengal everyday, political rallies were not granted permissions and youths chanting “Jai Shri Ram” put behind bars.

“She must remember that Mahatma Gandhi, too, had acknowledged Ram had played a pivotal role in shaping his life and he remained associated with Ram till the end of his life,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister said Mamata hated taking Lord Ram’s name. “She is having problems with Durga Puja and Kali Puja ….. maybe, for the sake of her vote bank politics, she is trying to scuttle people’s rights,” he said.

Urging the media to highlight how poll violence was predominant in Bengal, Modi said: “During the panchayat polls, many were killed in Bengal. Even during the Lok Sabha polls, there are no reports of poll violence across India, except in Bengal. Candidates are attacked, booths captured and democracy threatened in this state.”
